LinkPost – March 2009
A new feature I've decided to put on the DevBlog is something I like to call the "LinkPost". This is mainly a collection of links that I either followed or used during the month. I've kind of done this before (massive posts with tons of links in them), but those posts weren't quite the same as this. Hopefully you'll find this useful, and of course if you found any interesting links during the month, feel free to throw them in the comments. Oh, and these are not sorted at all, just a random grab-bag of where I went, and what I looked at.
Note: this post is rather long, so I've kept the whole post off of the main page, click the 'read more' link below to see the entire post/list
IE 8 (cue the beginning is the end is the beginning):
IE8 was released, web developers both cried and rejoiced at it's arrival. You can go and download it and start using it as well... But you probably won't want to do that at work, it seems to have some serious issues with company firewalls. You'll also want to keep the ie7 rendering code handy. You also may want to visit the Internet Explorer Compatibility Center
SuperPreview (like ie6, but slower, oh and you can't click on links):
SuperPreview - It has the ie6 rendering engine built in, but man is it wicked slow, and not all that useful. Sitepoint has a little review/post on it. In my opinion it's better to keep on moving with your VM that has ie6 installed (yeah turns out that xenocode browser idea was pretty flawed, but good try). SuperPreview Download link
Bug Tracking:
MantisBT - A fairly nice little Bug-Tracking software, I downloaded it, but haven't used it yet. It seems rather easy to use though.
Email App:
Postbox - A nice looking email client, it catalogs everything that comes in so you can search and find whatever you are looking for.
Free Stock Photo Sites - This really should be self explanitory:
Screenshot Software:
Greenshot - This is an open source, fairly decent screen capture program. While not quite as good as FSCapture (the last free version), it is a nice self-contained program you can throw on a stick and take with you.
Icon Set:
Fugue Icon Set - Yep, it's an icon set... A huge icon set.
Mobilize your site:
5 free ways to mobilize your site - Nice list of resources to get your site viewable on mobile devices.
Adobe Tutorials:
Massive collection of various Adobe product tutorials - Yeah, I think the title there pretty much sums it up.
jQuery Effects Framework:
GX - an animation framework for jQuery (yeah, I know, jQuery already has a really nice framework, but this is different..ish)
Remote Site File Management:
XtraUpload - Pretty much the same thing as fileupload, or megaupload. Only this is the software that drives it, so you can set up your own little download-site.
Microsoft Web Tools:
Microsoft Web Platform Installer - I was doing a side job and needed IIS/ASP/SQL etc installed so I could get the job done, this handy little installed took care of installing all that crap. Warning, once you install this, it doesn't go away until you uninstall, meaning everytime you boot up you get to see the "what m$ web product haven't you installed, and all the ones you already did install."
Music services:
mixtape.me - a great little audio streaming site similar to seeqpod, skreemr, etc.
Texture Site:
CGTextures - Nope, I'm pretty sure it's not CG, but it is a fabulous texture site, you are limited to 15mb's of download per day though.
Web Developer Skills:
10 rare html tags - This is actually an interesting little read, it reminds us of those tags that aren't dead yet that not many people are using.
Creative Errors:
Creative 404 pages - A nice list of real 404 error pages, who said a 404 had to be a blank boring page?
Fonts:
Fonts500 - The top 500 fonts used on the internet
Flash Webapp/Widget Creation:
Produle - I haven't really played with this yet, but the idea sounds promising. You can create flash webapps and widgets with this online creation tool.
CSS Trickery:
The Cool of CSS - 25 tutorials on interesting and cool things you can do with CSS.
Adobe Air Apps:
28 Adobe Air Apps for Web Design/Developers - It's true, I only use about 3 of them, but that doesn't mean you won't use more! I'm digging the adobe air apps lately, even if some of them are a frivolous waste of RAM.
OSX Hint:
The real way to take a screenshot on a Mac - what you think 'grab' is the screen shot utility of choice? ha! while working on my mac and getting flustered at how difficult it was to take a stupid screenshot of an area and save it as a png (not a tiff!.. stupid grab) I stumbled onto this little gem.
GIT (a how-to):
How to use Git - Git, the new CVS/SVN. This is for all you visual types out there that like pictures etc.
Design Sites/Blogs:
29 Design Sites - This is a list of 29 design blogs/sites that are fun to follow, either because they'll keep you on the latest trend, or because they have pointers and tutorials to keep your skill set up.
WordPress Themes:
Yay, wordpress themes - Yep, and they might not suck.
Browser Fun:
Chrome experiment - This what happens when developers start to play with canvas...(it's really just a nice time-kill, but a preview of where browsers are headed).
jCarouselLite:
jCarouselLite - a nice 2kb implementation of jCarousel, yeah it's got a few bugs, and yeah the main developer hasn't worked on it in a year, but this is still pretty good.
Websnapshot (that's how I got all these pics):
Websnapshot - This was on the lsit of adobe air apps, but I'm using it now, and I likes it, so it's getting mentioned again.
More Fontage:
Broble - Free Font Sharing, have a free font? Want to share it?
Sprites, by Mozilla:
CSS Spriting - This time from the boys at mozilla.
If my PC were a Mac:
XWDock - It's like the OSX Dock, only for windows. Yep it supports stacks too. No, I haven't tried it yet, mostly because I enjoy my rocket dock, but if I ever had to start over and couldn't remember what rocketdock was called, or if they charged money for rocketdock, I'd be all over this.
