linkpost-may-2009

Yep, I’m a few days late, but this month is full of more tasty linked goodness! Plenty of image links, multimedia, jQuery, generic web dev, some WordPress, a couple of iPhone links, plenty of ‘other’, and of course what a LinkPost be without tons and tons of fonts (now that I’ve said that, next month watch there not be any ;) )?

Graphics, imagery, and the like:

SmashingMagazine: sprites – a nice collection of sprite tutorials

35 inkscape tutorials – Awesome! Yes! Inkscape Rules! w00t! Thanks Speckyboy!

30 places to find CreativeCommons licensed media – Because who doesn’t need the occasional freebie…ish

Best Grunge Textures and Brushes… – Time to get your grunge on, and not talkin’ bout your old plaid shirt and doc martin shoes…

Optimize your png files – Optimize your png’ery, in ’bout five minutes… Actually this article is pretty much a bust, it’s just common sense mixed with smush.it. Although the png compressors aren’t a bad idea…

Video

Cinecode – Open-source video to FLV converter. I haven’t tried it, but it looks great.

Best tutorials for cinematic visual effects – If you have 3dsmax, and/or after effects, this will suck up a month of your life, and you will thank me (or smashing magazine) for it.

EncodeHD – DoubleTwist is cool, wicked buggy, but cool.  That being said, uninstall it, throw it away and use this instead! you don’t have to sync, you don’t have to sign-up, and it runs from a usb stick (if you want)!

10 free screen recording softwares… – Ever wanted to screen cast but didn’t know where to start? You do now.

8 free mp3, flash video, and audio plugins/players – Not a fan of their design/layout, but it’s a good list.

Demystifying the jQuery selectors optimization – Optimize your jQuery code – speed baby, speed!

15 exceptional jQuery resources and tutorials – Yep another list of jQuery tutorials, get started today, you can catch up, I believe in you.

15 excellent jquery plugins to enhance html forms – Make your forms pretty with jQuery.

Extend your google analytics with jQuery – You probably use both, now combine them to make the ultimate hybrid that may usher in the apocolypse.

6 Flexible jQuery plugins to control webpage layous easily – Showing WebResourcesDepot some love, thanks for the great post!

jGrowl, like Growl but with jQuery – Me love Growl, now jQuery can make your webapp love it too… or at least look like it.

jQuery tutorals Map 2009 – Right, here’s the may jQuery tutorial links, I knew  I was missing something.

HTML/CSS/JS

10 cross browser css properties you have probably forgotten – a decent list of css properties… oddly enough, we use most of them still.

See your css changes in real-time – This is more awesome than it sounds, yes you have firebug, but what about when you want to see a change happen in safari, ie, and firefox at the same time?! Yeah, you use this.

jsTracer – an interesting approach to javascript tracing.

jTrace – Yeah, I didn’t like the above solution so much, so I coded my own (both a jQuery plug-in (ish) and a stand-alone)

15 free functionality and load testing tools… – List of testing software for you web applications

Styling your lists – We already do some of these, and some are interesting, pretty good read.

Build your own javascript stack tracers – Links are here, and another one here.

Mollom, the spam stopper – Similar to Akismet and friends, this one is used by Sony, Adobe, WB, and more… oh, and it’s free (thanks WRD for spotting this)

10 essential dom methods and techniques for practical javascript – sometimes your project doesn’t have jQuery, and it’s not going too, that’s when your skills (that you learned from this link) shine.

CSS Enhancements… – a few quick css tricks (that may not work in all browsers).

25 important web design tools – This is a nice list of the tools that the author uses, I use quite a few of these myself.

7 ways to load ajax – ajax loading tutorials, I’ve done a few of them, ajax makes me happy.

Extend your WordPress with these plugins – Noupe has a nice list of WP extending plugins.

iPhone

How to get started with iPhone Dev – Ryan read this and while it is useful, it’s not useful.  It highlights features that won’t be accepted by apple… so keep looking for some xcode tutorials, although this is a nice design read.

8 ways to view page source code on your iPhone – Sometimes you need to see what’s going on, on your iPhone.

Other

VisualSVN Server – The All in one SVN solution (Bert Tested, and Bert approved!)

Eye tracking websites – Nice study on eye-tracking and websites.

Crossloop – Like VNC, but with a sign up, and a ghetto web 2.0 client widgety thing.

Demonsterdebugger – Debug your flash, flex, and air apps with this.

Prism, by Mozilla – If AIR had been created by Mozilla, this is what it may have looked/been like.

Sectools index – Always nice to refresh yourself on security tools, and it really has been a while since I’ve been to insecure.org.

Poster – a pretty cool Firefox add-on that lets you mess with webservices (you can do posts, gets, etc. with it)

Enable 1/2 star ratings in iTunes – See I knew I wasn’t the only one that wanted this.  Although I’d settle for a value-10 system with one decimal place too.  This works, and it’s made my iTunes more useful, cos not all songs are 3 stars, some are 3 1/2.

Tweetmypc – Yeah, shutdown your computer with a tweet.

Mynimi – Like Compiz (for linux) on crack for windows!

Slack Radio – Like pandora, only it plays commercials, likes to play the same songs A LOT, and doesn’t have an AIR app.  Wait, why did I link this again?
